The Move Process has 5 steps that can help you map out your move and keep track of all the details associated with transporting your belongings.

Preparation

Preparation for a move includes meeting with an Allied Van Lines Personal Relocation Consultant and taking a detailed inventory of everything in your home that needs to be moved. You will review all the services available to you and confirm the date of your move. At this point you'll also identify any special circumstances of your move and have any questions or concerns addressed.

Packing and Loading

On the day of your move, your Allied movers and your driver will prepare an inventory of everything that is to be moved from your home and take any special precautions needed during the loading process. Your items will be tagged and loaded, and you'll receive a bill of lading authorizing your move. Then your belongings will be on their way to your new home!

Delivery

After you arrive in your new location, you contact your Allied move coordinator to arrange for a final delivery of your shipment. When your shipment arrives, you can help the unloading process by having a room-by-room layout in mind for your belongings. Check items off the Customer Check-Off Sheet as they're brought in to your house, noting their condition. If an item appears to have been damaged during the move or any items are missing, make a note on the inventory and notify your move coordinator.

Payment

Allied Van Lines' drivers are required to collect payment for your move before your shipment can be unloaded. If your shipment is placed in storage, charges up to that point are due at that time. Payments must be made by certified or cashier's check, travelers' checks, money order, or cash. Many agents also accept credit cards. Personal checks cannot be accepted. A copy of the bill of lading signed by the driver will be your receipt.

Unpacking

If you order any unpacking services from Allied, your move coordinator will arrange to unpack cartons at the time of delivery and will remove used packing materials. If you choose to unpack your shipment yourself, you'll be responsible for disposing of used cartons and other materials.

Allied Van Lines can handle all your packing needs for you... but if you do decide to do your own packing, here are a few tips from the pros to help:

Get the Right Equipment

By equipment, we mean the right boxes (professional quality), packing materials, tape, scissors, and permanent marker. Allied offers a custom set of packing materials suited to almost any item including mattresses, dishes, large articles, mirrors, and more.

Use the Right Technique

• Use wadded newspaper to provide cushion in your boxes.
• Wrap fragile items in paper before placing in boxes.
• Don't over pack. Keep boxes and cartons to 50 pounds or less.
• Pack items you won't need until after you are settled in your new location first.
• Follow a schedule. Don't underestimate how long it takes to pack!
• Go room by room to stay organized.
• As you complete a room, sort boxes and cartons by weight to make the loading process easier.
• Label boxes clearly with your name, room, where the box should go in your new home, and a brief description of contents.

Know The No-No's

Don't pack the following items:

• Flammable fluids such as lighter fluid or gasoline
• Chemicals including auto maintenance fluids
• Fireworks
• Paints and paint thinner
• Combustible objects such as oxygen bottles or propane tanks
• Firearms

Keepers

Keep the following items with you when you travel:

• Family photos
• Prescription drugs
• Children's toys
• Important papers and personal records (wills, insurance policies, deeds, stock certificates, etc.)

The actual day you move can be hectic and busy, but with some pre-planning, everything should go smoothly. Allied movers will work with you to make the day a success.

• Make sure all entryways, doorways, porches and driveways are clear.
• Remove potted plants, door mats, low-hanging items and rugs.
• If you live in a building with elevators, be sure to notify the management in advance that you will need use of the elevators.
• Be sure to set aside a box or travel bag of personal items that you will need immediately in your new home. Take this with you when you travel.
• At least one person should be present during the loading process. Drivers and other personnel may have questions or need access that only you can provide.
• Your driver will present you with a bill of lading - a record of all your possessions that have been packed. Be sure to go over these documents carefully before signing them. Keep them with your other important papers in a briefcase or other carrier.

Moving with Children

A move can be a disrupting event for a child. Here are a few tips to help children adjust to all the changes:

• Communicate with your children about the move and what changes it will bring for them.
• Make sure to keep special items handy on moving day.
• Have children pack special toys in a custom box. Help them decorate the box!
• Visit your new community and home with your child before the move if possible.
• Ask for your child's input on the decoration of his or her new room.

Moving Pets

Pets are an important part of the family and their safety and well being should be considered in advance of any major move. Take your pet to the veterinarian for an exam before your move. The vet can give you advice and may suggest a tranquilizer for your pet during travel. Keep copies of your pet's health documents in a safe place with other important documents.

When traveling with your pet by air:

• Book a direct flight if possible to reduce confinement time.
• Let your pet get accustomed to its kennel in advance.
• Clearly mark your pet's container "Live Animal" and include all relevant address information as well as your pet's name, your phone number, and special handling instructions.

When traveling by car with your pet:

• Take your pet on short drives to acclimate.
• Don't feed your pet for several hours before the trip.
• Pack fresh water and stop frequently.
• Never leave a pet unattended in a car - even for a short time!

Moving Electronics

When packing valuable electronics, special care needs to be taken. If you no longer have the original packaging for items such as big-screen TVs, use a sturdy carton with plenty of newsprint or Styrofoam. Label the package "Extremely Fragile."

For computer equipment:

• Disconnect all wires and cables. Do not try to pack your computer "partially connected."
• For printers, detach paper holders and remove toner and ink cartridges.
• Treat monitors as you would television screens or mirrors.
• Back up computer files onto external storage devices or discs.

Moving Wine

Wine collections can be valuable personal items and require special care. Large, high-value collections should be moved in climate-controlled vehicles. Small collections can be transported in a car or van. Professional movers are experienced at packing wine correctly, including storing the wine on its side. If you are packing wine yourself, obtain specially designed wine-packing boxes.
